Everything You Wanted to Know About The Republic of Hawai'i
In case you didn't know from 1894-98, Hawaii was a republic and was known as the Republic of Hawaii.
The U.S president Grover Cleveland was a dear friend of the Queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani and this friendship had kept him away from the thought of annexing Hawaii all through his term. After him McKinley won the elections and became the new president in 1896 and with this the annexation became a threat to Hawaii once again. In 1897 the president, after a few important negotiations, signed a treaty of annexation with the representatives of Hawaii and deposited it to the Senate to be approved.
Thus in 1898, Hawaii was annexed by U.S as their own territory. Till today, the legal issues are to be cleared out regarding it though. Then in 1900, Hawaii was gifted with the proposal of self governance. It kept the Lolani Palace as the Capitol Building. For 60 years, Hawaii remained a territory.
The Admission Act was passed in 1959 by the houses of congress. President Eisenhower signed the law. In June that year, a poll was taken to count the percentage of people of Hawaii who were ready for statehood and wanted it. The majority wanted it. It is not considered a very fair poll as the choice was between statehood and remaining a territory. But the unfairness wasn't counted and the name of Hawaii was struck of the U.N list of Non-self-Governing territories.
Hawaii turned modern soon after it was made into a state. There was heavy construction every where and the economy of the place sky-rocketed.
The Democratic Party of Hawaii came into power soon after the Hawaii Republican Party was voted out.
In the past few years the U.S has done a great deal to preserve and popularize the culture and traditions of Hawaii. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs was created to make sure the language, traditions and the culture remained.
